It all started when we bought the house on Hill Street...
Built in 1910 and owned by the same family for three generations, it was sold "as is" for good reason. There wasn't a single square inch of the place that didn't need work. Even the ceilings had layers of peeling wallpaper!
As we dove headfirst into restoring the house from top to bottom, we quickly discovered just how challenging home renovations can be. So many contractors didn't return our phone calls. Or they'd schedule a walk-thru only to never show up. Or they'd show up but never send an estimate. So many lost hours with nothing to show for it.
Then, when we'd finally jumped through all those hoops and signed a contract, the people showing up to do the work (whom we'd never even met) usually arrived late - sometimes days late. They'd disappear in the middle of a project - sometimes for weeks at a time. And, when they finally finished, too many of them left us with shoddy work, a big mess and more often than not, a bigger bill than we'd bargained for.
It soon became clear that the only way to get things done right was to do them ourselves. Having built successful careers as high-end advertising photographers, we knew we had the attention to detail, creative problem solving skills, manual dexterity and vision to master this new creative medium so, we invested in training and tools, then honed our skills restoring our beautiful historic home.
To our surprise, we found the work enormously gratifying - the process of figuring out the best way to tackle a project, coordinating all the moving parts, watching the space transform before your eyes and knowing that you just made something beautiful. It's a lot like advertising photography but even more meaningful and magical!
Eventually we realized that we could do this work we loved and help a lot of people by being the contractors we wished we could have found for our beloved home on Hill Street.
